November 2010: The Blowjob With Teeth

In June 2010, the unemployment rate for those age 25+ that held a bachelor’s degree or higher was 4.4%. For those in that same age bracket with only a high school diploma, the unemployment rate was 10.8%. Perhaps the problem with our economy isn’t so much a lack of jobs, but a lack of education. Maybe the stimulus should have included more funding for THAT which would have yielded serious long term benefits.
Instead, the stimulus bill contained 40% tax cuts to appease the flawed ideologies of the Republicans. In return, only three Republicans voted for the bill. So the GOP minority had nearly half a say in the overall stimulus bill yet only three of them voted for it in the end. And they call Obama partisan?? Fortunately the stimulus did prevent a full-blown depression and saved and/or created millions of jobs. Did it do enough? Absolutely not. But whose fault is that when you consider that nearly half the bill, the part that did little if anything to help the economy, was tainted with useless tax cuts?
Then on health care, Obama and the Democrats fought for the public option which would have massively decreased the number of uninsured in this country AND taken away the monopoly that private insurers have had on the industry by introducing competition to the marketplace. Because of a complete lack of Republican support, an ignorant American populace gullible enough to take Fox News seriously, and a handful of gutless Dems that backed away from their convictions, we wound up with a watered down health care bill that was passed into law. Still, the final bill that was passed will ensure that 34-million uninsured Americans will have health insurance as of 2014. Several other measures have already gone into effect: children can no longer be rejected by insurers for having pre-existing conditions and dependents up to age 26 can remain on their parents’ insurance policy. The Republicans call this a “government takeover” and have stigmatized Obama with the labels of being a socialist, marxist, communist and, as can be found rumbling through the Tea Party crowd, a Nazis
Oh, and the Iraq War ended under Obama’s watch. Does this mean anything to you? Is that really so insignificant?
During these November 2010 elections, keep all this in mind. Obama, albeit naively, tried desperately for bipartisanship during the two years that he could have accomplished just about anything in his agenda. And how is Obama and his Democratic Party being rewarded for extending a hand of compromise to the other side? By likely losing the House of Representatives and a portion of the Senate because American voters don’t seem to understand that the two giant measures of the past two years (a Stimulus Bill that saved the economy from utter ruin and a Health Care Bill that expanded the number of insured Americans) were designed and implemented to HELP the American people.
And what did the Republican Party do during these two years? They said “fuck you” to the needs of our nation. They have blatantly announced that if they gain back power they would do the same as before. (Before = the Bush Administration). So do we want Bush’s America? Or Obama’s?
Is Obama perfect? Absolutely not. Are the Democrats great? Hell, no. But the Republicans suck so much harder and it seems that America is oddly taking that in a pleasurable context. It isn’t. This is the BAD kind of sucking. This is a blowjob with teeth.
It’s stunning to watch the American people cheer “Yes, Yes Yes!” for the Party that campaigns on “No, No, No!”. But if the citizens of this nation decide to vote Republican and America goes to shit, then that’s fine with me. Why? Because we’ll deserve it. If we’re not smart enough to vote with intelligence instead of emotion then we don’t deserve the rewards that would have come with doing so.
So go on, America. Bend over. It’s what we do best. I for one will keep my cheeks clenched and hope against hope that we’re smarter than the polls have indicated… because hope is all I have left, though it’s admittedly in very, very short supply.
