I must emphatically urge you not to endorse Hillary Clinton nor should you support her campaign in any way.
Bill Clinton advised Trump to run knowing full well that any other Republican nominee would be able to defeat Hillary. If you recall, John Kasich averaged 8% ahead of her in the polls and he only won Ohio where he was Governor. So if one of the weakest Republican primary finalists was able to soundly crush Hillary, that is extremely indicative of how weak she really is. For all we know the Republicans will come up with a maneuver to nominate someone that isn’t Trump, in which case we’ll have a Republican in Office without a doubt if Hillary is the nominee. Obviously this cannot be allowed to happen.
That being said, it’s important to really do the math here. You like saying that you’re “good at arithmetic” in interviews, so maybe this will be redundant. BUT… Independents, largely excluded from the primary process, overwhelming want a non-Establishment candidate. Realistically, that means you or Trump. Not Hillary. Should Hillary become the official nominee the independents will flock to the only non-Establishment option left. Hillary will also be unable to earn the vote of anti-Trump Republicans because she is far too-despised by the right (and for good reason, I’d argue). You, Bernie, would win the Independents. You’d win the Democrats. AND you’d get a portion of the Republicans because they don’t hate you with such fervor.
And remember, the DNC platform is non-binding. Based on Hillary’s history, do you honestly believe she’ll follow the agreed upon blueprint? Don’t let her sucker you like that. It’s a bait and switch. This is what she’s best at. She’ll say and do anything to get elected. Even then-Senator Barack Obama knew that.
You can still win, especially after James Comey called Hillary “extremely careless” with the classified emails. I know you downplay the email stuff, but that was an issue made MORE serious because Hillary blatantly lied about it to the American people. That’s the area to focus on. Her lack of judgement. The trust that has been further eroded. You have her on the ropes right now, man! She barely defeats Trump in the polls, her favorability rating is at an all-time low, the public feels betrayed… deliver the knock-out punch, Senator. Don’t help her back on her feet. Not now! Once she’s up, Trump will knock her right back down anyway. Use this window of opportunity to defeat her and go up against Trump yourself. And win.
If your goal is truly to defeat Donald Trump, then you simply cannot endorse Hillary Clinton. YOU are the only one that can defeat him. You said it yourself in an interview that you do not want Americans to have to vote for the lesser of two evils.
“I don’t want to see the American people voting for the lesser of two evils. I want the American people to be voting for a vision of economic justice, of social justice, of environmental justice, of racial justice.” – Bernie Sanders (May 21, 2016)
If you stand by this, then do not endorse the lesser evil. Only with President Bernie Sanders in Office will the DNC platform be truly fulfilled and improved upon. You know this to be true.
On Tuesday, I recommend surprising the world. Use that stage to bravely make it clear that Hillary and Trump are both disastrous candidates and that you will not rest until they are both defeated. You owe the Democratic Party nothing. Stand up as the Independent you truly are and FIGHT.
You’re stronger than you know.
